“Lee Joo-shil, Star of Squid Game, Dies After Battle with Stomach Cancer
The beloved actress from the hit series Squid Game was diagnosed with stomach cancer just three months ago. Before her passing, Lee was hospitalized, and her heart stopped at the hospital in Uijeongbu. Her farewell ceremony is set for February 5.
Born on March 8, 1944, Lee Joo-shil made her stage debut in 1965 and participated in numerous well-known productions in South Korea. This was not her first battle with cancer—back in 1993, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but she triumphed over the disease after a decade of treatment. Throughout this time, Lee continued to perform on stage and appear in films.
Her last notable role was in Squid Game, where she appeared in the second season. The series centers around people who agree to take part in a mysterious tournament, only to discover that it’s a deadly survival game.
Lee’s extensive filmography includes 60 works, with notable projects like Train to Busan, Day of Glory, Tomorrow’s Victory, and others. Additionally, Lee earned a doctorate in public health from Wonkwang University.”
