Actress Joan Van Ark has had a long and successful career in Hollywood. But it’s her role as Valene Ewing on the TV show Knots Landing that really made her famous.
Joan was born on June 16, 1943, in New York City. Her parents weren’t involved in TV or movies, but Joan always wanted to be part of Hollywood. She started acting when she was young. While performing in Denver, she met actress Julie Harris, who encouraged her to go to Yale Drama School. With Julie’s help, Joan got a scholarship and became one of the few women at the school.
After doing theater for a while, Joan moved to TV. She appeared in shows like Temperature’s Rising, Spider-Woman, and Days of Our Lives, and even had a small part in Bonanza. But it was her role as Valene Ewing on Dallas in 1978 that really got her noticed. Later, she played the same character in Knots Landing, a spin-off of Dallas. Knots Landing was actually written before Dallas, but Dallas was chosen to be made into a show first.
Joan was a main character on Knots Landing for 13 seasons. She almost didn’t take the role because she was already working on other projects, but her husband convinced her. When the show decided to introduce Valene’s mother, Joan was surprised and thrilled to learn that Julie Harris, her mentor and friend, would play the part.
After 13 seasons and 327 episodes, Joan left Knots Landing, and the show ended soon after. She felt sad to leave because she loved working with the cast and crew, but she wanted to try new things. She knew her departure might have contributed to the show ending, but she felt it was time for a change.
