“Twiggy at 73”: A Glimpse into the Life of an Iconic Model

Twiggy, the famous model, changed her appearance by getting a pixie haircut in the 1960s. Even though she didn’t initially want the androgynous look, she went along with it at a fancy salon. This hairstyle became iconic and influenced baby doll styles that are still popular today.

Twiggy, whose real name is Lesley Hornby, turned 74 on September 19. In 1966, she was trying to start her modeling career but was told she was too short. She ended up at the House of Leonard in London, where she met the renowned stylist Leonard Lewis. He wanted models to try his new crop haircut, and Twiggy agreed to it, even though she didn’t really want a short haircut.

During a podcast with Jessie Ware, Twiggy explained that she was too shy to refuse the haircut. The process took seven hours, including cutting, coloring, and recutting. Despite not initially liking the androgynous look, Twiggy realized the impact it had when photographer Barry Lategan took pictures of her with the new hairstyle.

Twiggy’s pixie cut emphasized her big blue eyes, which she enhanced with mascara on her lower lashes. She also revealed that her distinctive eye makeup was inspired by playing with makeup at home as a teenager.

After the photos were seen by a fashion editor, Twiggy became the face of ’66 and quickly rose to fame. She became a fashion icon, working with designer Mary Quant and even having a Barbie doll modeled after her.
