Piper Laurie, Hollywood Icon Known for ‘Carrie’ and ‘Twin Peaks,’ Passes Away at 91

Piper Laurie, a famous actress known for her roles in movies like “Carrie” and “Twin Peaks,” has passed away at the age of 91. Her manager, Marion Rosenberg, confirmed that she died of old age in Los Angeles. Rosenberg described her as an extraordinary talent and a wonderful person.

Piper Laurie, whose real name was Rosetta Jacobs, was born in Detroit in 1932. She began her acting career in 1950 when she was 18 years old, appearing in two films that year: “Louisa” and “The Milkman.” In “Louisa,” she acted alongside Ronald Reagan, who would later become the President of the United States. Laurie mentioned in her 2011 memoir that she had a romantic relationship with Reagan.

Laurie shared that her passion for acting started at a young age when her mother encouraged her to enter a movie contest. She later took acting classes to overcome her anxiety while performing. Over the course of her almost 70-year career (her last roles were in 2018), she grew in confidence and became a well-regarded actress.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal in 2021, Laurie mentioned that her favorite role was playing Margaret White, the sinister mother in the 1976 movie “Carrie,” based on Stephen King’s book. She enjoyed making the film after a long break from acting.

Piper Laurie received several awards during her career, including an Emmy Award for her role in the 1986 TV movie “Promise” and a Golden Globe Award for her part in “Twin Peaks.” She was also nominated for three Academy Awards for her roles in “The Hustler” (1961), “Carrie,” and “Children of a Lesser God” (1986).

She is survived by her daughter, Anne Grace Morgenstern, who is 52 years old. Anne is her only child from her 20-year marriage to Joe Morgenstern, which lasted from 1962 to 1982.
